Open a window and the air comes in, and so does the hair. In a home with a cat or a dog, the problem is rarely the hair itself. It is the loose hair drifting onto the couch, into the AC vents, and into your lungs. If someone in the house reacts to animal dander, no amount of cleaning holds it down, because dander travels through the air instead of waiting on the floor for you to wipe it up.
What a pet air purifier does is catch loose hair, dander and odor before any of it lands. Do you really need one with pets, and how is it different from a regular purifier?

How to read HEPA grades, and what separates H12 from H13
HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) grades come from the European EN 1822 standard. The higher the number, the more 0.3 micron particles the filter captures:

H13 looks a lot better than H12, but the gap is subtler than it appears. H13 media has smaller pores and higher air resistance, so with the same fan pushing through it, airflow comes out lower than with H12. H13 catches a higher share of individual particles, but total air turnover can be lower, and in a large room the real-world result does not always come out ahead. The price of H13 is airflow. The same budget spent on H12 can buy a higher CADR, which for a mid-size or large home may be the more useful trade.
A simple rule: someone in the house has asthma or atopic dermatitis, choose H13. You are mainly controlling loose hair and everyday pet odor, H12 is enough, and the same budget buys a higher CADR that covers more square footage.
What makes one purifier better at hair than another
Differences in hair capture usually show up in three places:
Density and area of the hair pre-filter: hair is more than ten times the diameter of PM2.5. Catching it with the main HEPA is overkill, and it clogs fast. A separate hair pre-filter is the real first stage. Some models skip it or make it very thin, which is why a main filter can be spent within a month.
Where the air comes in: most loose hair drifts near the floor, so a unit with intake vents wrapping around the lower body picks up hair better than one that draws from the top. Easy check: set the unit on the floor and look down for a large intake grille.

Physical adsorption by activated carbon: porous carbon granules have an enormous surface area and trap gas molecules physically. It works quickly. The drawback is that once the surface is saturated it stops working, so the media needs regular replacement.
Chemical breakdown by enzymes: enzymes split odor molecules into smaller, odorless ones such as water and CO2. It is the same principle as the enzymes in laundry detergent that break down protein stains, with airborne odor molecules in place of stains on fabric. Coverage in sq ft is roughly CADR (m3/h) x 3.2
For example, a unit rated at 330 m3/h suits a space of roughly 1,050 sq ft. Because a pet household generates hair and odor faster, the practical recommendation is a CADR about 20% above your estimated area, so the machine has headroom for peaks such as right after a litter box visit or a bath.
A few conditions that get overlooked:
- An open floor plan (kitchen joined to living room) is not automatically one filtered space. Airflow paths decide how far the unit reaches
- More pets means faster generation at the source, so the CADR requirement rises with them
- Dense furniture and a space that does not breathe cut the effective CADR

Common misconceptions worth clearing up first
"A higher HEPA grade is always better": as covered above, H13 does not suit every situation. It depends on whether your goal is allergy control or managing hair and odor. For the latter, H12 with a large CADR is usually more effective.
"Ionizers and ozone are a bonus": some models advertise negative ions or low-concentration ozone for disinfection. Ozone does oxidize organic molecules and remove odor, but it irritates the airways of people and animals, so it is not recommended for long stretches in a closed room with either. A model labeled ozone-free, or with the feature switchable off, is the safer pick.
"A purifier replaces cleaning": a purifier captures what is suspended in the air. Hair on the floor, dander in the couch and allergens in the bedding are outside its job. The two tools complement each other, and neither substitutes for the other.
"A big number is all you need": CADR is measured in a standard test environment. In a real room, furniture blocks airflow and ventilation differs, so effective performance comes down. Placement and habits matter as much as the machine.

How often do the filters need changing?
Clean the hair pre-filter every two to four weeks, usually by shaking it out or running a low-suction vacuum over it. It is reusable and does not need replacing. The main HEPA filter lasts 6 to 12 months in a general household, and 3 to 6 months is the recommendation with a cat or dog. Watch for a PM2.5 reading that stays high, or airflow that has clearly weakened, as your signal to change it. Can H12 and H13 filters be swapped?
