"It was not even in use and it caught fire." Stories like that surface every few months and they are unsettling. The answer is: yes, it can happen, and it is almost always preventable. Understand the three things below and you cut the risk to a minimum.
1. Why a power bank can ignite, even sitting idle
A power bank holds a lithium battery, and its worst failure mode is thermal runaway: once there is an internal short, temperature spikes within seconds and a chain reaction starts a fire. Four causes account for most cases:
- Cheap cells and cut-rate protection circuits: no overcharge, over-discharge, short circuit, or thermal protection. This is the single largest category.
- Physical damage: dropped, crushed, or punctured by something sharp (keys pressing on it in a bag). A torn internal separator can short, which is the main reason a pack that is "not even in use" can ignite.
- Heat: left in a car in summer or on a sunny windowsill, cells degrade under sustained heat.
- Swelling from age: two or three years of use and a bulging shell means gas has formed inside. Continuing to use it is dangerous.
In other words, ignition is rarely bad luck. It is the product of build quality plus how it was stored.
2. How to pick a power bank that will not catch fire
Treat these as a checklist while shopping:
- Real certification: look for a genuine safety certification mark and a traceable number on the product or packaging. In the US that is typically a UL or ETL listing; packs sold in Taiwan carry the BSMI inspection mark, a round symbol plus an inspection number. Either way, an unmarked cell is not worth the savings.
- Protection features spelled out: the spec sheet should list overcharge, over-discharge, short circuit, over-temperature, and over-current protection. All five.
- Clear capacity and Wh ratings: a manufacturer that labels honestly usually has better quality control. Be wary of anything vague that never states watt-hours.
- Cells and technology: grade-A cells are safer than recycled no-name cells, and recent solid-state and semi-solid-state designs resist leaking and hold up better to heat, which makes them a more reassuring choice.
- Brand and warranty: choose a brand with real after-sales support and product liability coverage, so someone is accountable if something goes wrong.
3. Storing and using it correctly

- Keep it away from heat: not in the car, not in direct sun, and never charging under a blanket or a pillow.
- Avoid crushing it: give it its own pocket in a bag rather than letting it press against keys and hard objects.
- Inspect it regularly: if it feels hot, smells odd, or the shell is bulging, stop using it immediately.
- Do not run it to the extremes: for long-term storage, leave it around 50% charged rather than fully charged or fully empty.
- Retire old cells: after roughly two to three years, or several hundred cycles, both performance and safety decline. Replace it.
What to do if it swells or overheats
Do not puncture it, and do not put it in household trash or anywhere near a flame. Move it to a ventilated spot away from anything flammable, on a hard surface such as a tiled balcony floor, and once it has cooled and stabilized, take it to a lithium battery recycling drop-off. Many hardware stores and electronics retailers accept them.
The bottom line
A power bank fire is not an accident you cannot prevent. Choose one with real certification and a full set of protection features and a more stable cell technology, then keep it away from heat, out from under pressure, and inspect it now and then, and the risk drops to a minimum.
